ShockShock, or ineffective oxygen delivery, may result from a variety of causes. Classically, in veterinary medicine, shock is divided into hypovolemic, septic, and cardiogenic shock. The common feature of these is the failure to adequately deliver sufficient oxygenated blood to meet the cellular needs. Animals assessed as unstable during triage will often be in shock. While each patient should be individually assessed, a flow chart may help to guide the clinician in determining the class of shock.
